Produkty Pitania Company reconstructed its treatment facilities
— 2008-10-07 —

Produkty Pitania Company came to Kaliningrad region ten years ago. Back in 1998 Russia’s largest producer of frozen convenience foods started building its production facilities in the region.
From the very start of the plant’s operation the company purchased and installed treatment facilities, which have been continuously modified and retrofitted. In 2008 the company completed another phase of construction of new treatment facilities.

The design was prepared by Lithuanian INIS, which is vastly experienced in designing and installing projects of the kind based on equipment from the German Huber Technology.
It is worth mentioning that this company was selected with a specific purpose in mind. Produkty Pitania specialists have taken a long time to select a contractor that would meet the main requirement of the plant, i.e. ensure that process waters are treated to the maximum extent using advanced technologies. Specialists came up with requirements specifications and announced an international tender. As a result, two companies - Huber Technology and another well-known Austrian company – were short-listed. The German company was selected from the two.
The contract, however, was made much later. Before signing Produkty Pitania specialists made a visit to a plant Lithuania, which uses similar treatment facilities. They looked at how it works, exchanged experience, considered all pros and contras and finally entered into the contract.
-It is worth mentioning that the existing treatment facilities will continue operation along with the newly installed equipment, - emphasizes Tatiana Luneva, OOO Produkty Pitania General Director. – As soon as the plan was commissioned, we started using the biological water treatment system capable of ensuring the treatment of 400 cubic meters. At that stage it was sufficient to meet the requirements of the plant. However, the company is planning further expansions to the plant, which means that we will need more process water and will generate more waste water to dump.
New treatment facilities have been installed and operate in pilot testing mode since August 1. Here is how it works: at the initial stage waste water is channeled through a system of grease capture circuits where grease, oil products and a variety of suspended solids are captured from the water.
This is followed by mechanical treatment. Dump water is filtered through large and small mesh screens. Particles sized 1+ mm remain on screens while water if further channeled to sewage regulator to be homogenized by mixing.
The resulting substance is then cleaned with a variety of physical and chemical methods. Waste water is mixed with chemical solvents to capture fine contaminants and precipitate them for further removal from waste water.
Water exiting this phase is already clean but there is an additional stage of bio cleaning. Thus the final waste water is in conformity with all sanitary standards.
All of the new equipment is fully automated and it takes a team of ten highly qualified people including environment experts, engineers, operators and treatment facilities mechanic workers to operate this equipment around the clock every day. Specialists work in two shifts to monitor and adjust the equipment.
As we mentioned above, all of the new equipment has been operating in the testing mode for quite a long time.
- This mode is not different from regular operation, - Tatiana Petrova explained. – However, in order to officially start operating the treatment facilities we need the approval from local authorities. We have all necessary documents in place.
Produkty Pitania Company will not stop there. By further investments in Kaliningrad production development and upgrades the company will continue to focus on environmental safety of its plants.
